The Renault 4 has returned, reimagined for the electric age. Ahead of its anticipated Irish launch this September, we had the opportunity to spend two days in Portugal putting the new Renault 4 E-Tech through its paces. Much like the recently unveiled Renault 5, this new model revives an icon, blending nostalgic design with modern electric technology.

Between 1961 and 1992, the original Renault 4 became a global success, with over 8.1 million units sold across Europe, South America, and Africa. Renowned for its durability and practicality, it earned cult status worldwide. The new Renault 4 E-Tech looks to build on that legacy, targeting young families and drivers seeking an affordable, versatile EV.

Design and Space

At 4.1 metres long, the Renault 4 is compact but surprisingly roomy inside. It’s 218mm longer than the new Renault 5, and that extra length makes a real difference—particularly in the back. Adults fit comfortably, with legroom surpassing rivals such as the MINI Aceman and Jeep Avenger.

The rear bench can even seat three passengers for short journeys, aided by a soft centre seat. Headroom is solid, although the high floor means under-thigh support isn’t ideal. Still, the added practicality compared to its smaller sibling makes the 4 E-Tech appealing for families.

Boot and Storage

Boot capacity is another highlight. Offering 420 litres, it’s generous for a car of this size. Renault has cleverly kept the loading height low, echoing the practicality of the original model. Beneath the boot floor sits a 55-litre compartment—ideal for charging cables—while the split-level false floor makes access simple even when the space is full.

Powertrain and Range

The Renault 4 E-Tech is powered by a 52 kWh lithium-ion battery and a 110 kW motor, producing 148 bhp and 245 Nm of torque. It accelerates from 0–100 km/h in 8.2 seconds and reaches an electronically limited top speed of 150 km/h. With a WLTP range of 409 km, it offers more than enough for daily use and longer trips. All models are fitted with an 11 kW AC bidirectional charger, while a 100 kW DC fast-charging option enables quick motorway top-ups.

For those who don’t require maximum range, a 40 kWh version with 308 km range is also expected, making it particularly well-suited to urban drivers in Ireland.

Driving Dynamics

Built on Renault’s AmpR Small platform—shared with the Renault 5—the 4 benefits from a slightly longer wheelbase, 18-inch alloys, and softer suspension tuning. This setup provides a comfortable ride with a raised stance, striking a balance between agility and refinement. It’s not quite as floaty as the original R4, but it rides more smoothly than rivals like the MINI Aceman.

At just 1,462kg, the 4 is relatively light for an EV, which helps deliver nimble handling. Steering is direct, and although there’s some body roll, it’s well contained. Renault has also equipped the car with its one-pedal driving system, offering four levels of regenerative braking via steering wheel paddles. The strongest mode allows the car to come to a near stop when lifting off the accelerator, though it feels more progressive than overly aggressive.

Verdict

The Renault 4 E-Tech is more than a nostalgic revival—it’s a capable, well-rounded EV that blends practicality with charm. Families will appreciate its generous rear legroom and 420-litre boot, while drivers will enjoy its balanced ride and accessible performance.

With pricing expected to start below €30,000, backed by competitive finance packages, the Renault 4 E-Tech looks set to become a strong contender in Ireland’s compact EV market. For those who like the Renault 5 but need extra space, the 4 is a stylish and versatile alternative ready to carry its iconic name into the electric era.
