Electric car range anxiety is real even if you don’t believe it

Kia EV5 2026

In 2026, “range anxiety” in Ireland isn’t just about a car battery going flat—it’s about the unique “mini-adventures” (and stresses) of driving on the Emerald Isle. While EVs are better than ever, when driving an EV, I still keep a close eye on that little bar that shows how far I can theoretically go.

The “Wild West” Infrastructure

The biggest issue is a tale of two Irelands. If you live in Dublin or Kildare, you’re never far from some kind of plug. But go West or Northwest, and things get trickier. In counties like Mayo or Donegal, charging stations are fewer and much farther apart. The real fear isn’t just the distance; it’s arriving at the only charger in town and finding a queue or worse still a “Technical Out of Order” sign. On a miserable rainy evening, that’s a stress nobody needs.

The “Grand Stretch” vs. The Big Freeze

Ireland’s weather plays a massive role. Our damp, cold winters are tough on batteries. When the temperature drops, an EV has to work overtime to keep the cabin warm and the battery happy. This can cut your driving range by nearly a third. A car that easily gets you from Cork to Dublin in the summer might leave you biting your nails near Portlaoise in January.

The “Diesel Habit”

For decades, we’ve been a nation of diesel lovers. We’re used to cars that can drive from Mizen to Malin Head on a single tank and even make the return journey without putting in more fuel. Switching to an EV requires a total “brain reset.” Instead of filling up once every two weeks, you’re now thinking about your “fuel” every day. For the many people living in apartments without their own driveway or charger, this turns a simple commute into a logistical puzzle.

The Good News

The government is currently rolling out high-power charging hubs every 30km–60km along major roads. As these hubs pop up, the “anxiety” is slowly being replaced by confidence. We’re getting there—it just takes a bit more planning than the old diesel days!
