If you’ve been keeping up with news from our overlords, the EU, you’ll be aware that the 2030/2035 ban on combustion engines is being dumped, and they are saying that the engine can stay. On the other hand, they can’t meet any emissions targets without the battery-powered cars that are now being sold in very high numbers.

Synthetic fuel is on the way, and this will benefit you and your car because it’s made in a laboratory and can be sold with zero emissions, and that means you will be able to choose a petrol-powered car or battery power or both, perhaps.

All these changes will, of course, affect the value of your car as the market will open to desire as well as cost. Fewer people might choose to buy an EV because now they believe there’s no hurry to change, and we can still go on lowering all transport emissions while still driving our old cars.

This is a win for car makers because the biggest problem for them is getting batteries. Unlike engines, batteries are made by external companies, so European car makers make some batteries and buy in others. Whereas engines are made in-house, so to speak, and therefore costs can be controlled.

There are some Chinese car makers like BYD who make their own batteries and cars so they can sell cars at a more affordable cost to the consumer as well as better profit margins for themselves. This goes back to engines won’t suit them quite as much as Euro-makers.

Whatever happens, I think this this a win for the consumer, and we will get more choice and some lower prices along with being able to bring back small engines in small cars.
