As 2024 draws to a close and Christmas music fills the airwaves, it’s a good moment to look back at the standout cars of the year. From budget-friendly practicality to cutting-edge electric innovation, these are our favourites from the past 12 months.
Best Overall: Dacia Duster
The all-new Dacia Duster could have been a risky move. The brand has built its reputation on simplicity and affordability, not flashy styling. Yet with the third-generation model, Dacia has managed to inject style without straying from its roots.
This new Duster looks far sharper than before, with striking headlights, a sculpted bonnet, and a bolder stance. Crucially, though, it remains excellent value, with entry-level prices under €26,000. The most basic model is stripped back—even lacking a traditional touchscreen, instead using a clever smartphone clamp—but thoughtful design touches make the cabin far more appealing than its predecessor.
Space is respectable, if a little tight for taller rear passengers, and the ride is particularly well-suited to Irish roads. Its suspension smooths out bumps without compromising stability, making it feel secure and comfortable.
Engine choices include the capable 1.0-litre, a 1.3-litre 4×4 with genuine off-road ability, and the standout 140hp hybrid, which balances performance, economy, and refinement. Stylish yet sensible, the Duster remains one of the best all-rounders you can buy.
Best Electric Car: Polestar 4
Polestar, once Volvo’s performance badge, came into its own this year as a full-fledged car brand. The updated Polestar 2 continues to impress—arguably beating the Tesla Model 3 at its own game—but 2024 saw the debut of two all-new models.
The Polestar 3 SUV brought plenty of presence and luxury, but it’s the sleek Polestar 4 that turned heads. Technically a crossover, its fastback silhouette and low, sporty proportions make it one of the most striking EVs of the year.
Inside, the minimalist Scandinavian design creates a calming, modern cabin. One unusual feature is the absence of a rear window, replaced by a rear-facing camera system to improve aerodynamics. It’s unconventional, but it works.
With strong range figures and sharp driving dynamics, the Polestar 4 isn’t just one of the best electric cars of 2024—it’s one of the coolest new cars full stop.
Most Sensible: Skoda Superb Combi
The Skoda Superb has always lived up to its ambitious name, and the new fourth-generation model takes things further. The Combi estate version is especially impressive, offering cavernous space, premium-level interior design, and outstanding refinement. Available with economical diesel engines or a plug-in hybrid boasting over 120km of electric range, the Superb is an ideal choice for families who need practicality without compromising on comfort.
Best Seven-Seater: Mazda CX-80
Sharing its platform with the CX-60, the Mazda CX-80 surprised us by being a far more complete package. Its extended wheelbase provides extra room and better proportions, while the interior—available in six- or seven-seat configurations—edges close to Audi and BMW in quality. Two standout powertrains are available: a 2.5-litre plug-in hybrid and a 3.3-litre straight-six mild-hybrid diesel that’s both smooth and efficient. Not cheap, but a genuinely premium option for growing families.
Most Exciting: Renault R5 E-Tech
The new Renault R5 E-Tech proves that small electric cars can be truly desirable. Inspired by the classic 1980s Renault 5, it blends retro charm with modern flair, featuring LED detailing and a stylish, contemporary cabin. It’s fun to drive, reasonably priced, and cleverly designed to make people want it for what it is—not just because it’s electric. A car that delivers excitement and accessibility in equal measure.
