From Aviation to Automotive
Nearly forty years after Airbus pioneered fly-by-wire in aircraft — replacing mechanical linkages with computer-controlled systems — the technology has finally made its way into cars. Lexus is the first to bring it to market, debuting a radical steer-by-wire system in the upcoming RZ 500.
Instead of a traditional steering wheel, the RZ introduces a Formula One–style yoke, a compact rectangular control that changes the way drivers interact with the car.
A Different Way to Drive
At first, the system feels unusual. The yoke’s smaller, linear grip eliminates the familiar “ten-to-two” hand position, and even the slightest movement produces an immediate steering response. Once adapted, however, the experience is deeply engaging — more akin to a high-end driving simulator than a conventional road car.
The responsiveness and feedback surpass the vagueness of traditional steering setups, making the RZ 500 feel sharper and more dynamic. Combined with the Direct4 all-wheel drive system, body roll is kept impressively low and the car’s driving dynamics feel thoroughly re-engineered.
Interior: A Step Toward Premium Rivals
Inside, Lexus has given the RZ a substantial makeover, moving closer to its premium German competitors. A highlight in the 500e is the use of Ultrasuede, a soft-touch material applied to the dashboard and door cards, adding an unmistakable sense of luxury.
The cabin is dominated — but not overwhelmed — by a sleek 14-inch multimedia screen, complemented by well-chosen materials and thoughtful design.
Equipment Levels
-
350e (entry model): 14-inch display, 18-inch alloy/resin wheels, LED headlights, digital rear-view mirror, head-up display, synthetic leather upholstery, heated power front seats, 22 kW onboard charger, and the comprehensive Lexus Safety System.
-
500e: All of the above, plus 20-inch wheels, black exterior accents, cornering lights, ambient cabin lighting, Ultrasuede upholstery, ventilated front seats, and heated seating front and rear.
The boot space is a generous 522 litres, extending to 1,451 litres with the seats folded, while passenger comfort remains strong both front and back.
Range and Charging Gains
Efficiency has also improved. The 350e now offers up to 568 km of range on 18-inch wheels, while the 500e achieves 456 km on 20-inch wheels. Both share a 77 kWh lithium-ion battery with a 22 kW onboard charger.
Charging from 10 to 80 percent takes just 30 minutes, helped by a pre-conditioning system that optimises battery temperature before plugging in — particularly useful in colder weather.
Closing the Gap
Lexus has long played the underdog against BMW, Audi, and Mercedes, brands that built dominance during the petrol and diesel era. But with the playing field resetting in the electric age, the RZ 500 shows Lexus closing that gap significantly. With its futuristic steering, premium materials, and solid efficiency gains, it feels less like a follower and more like a genuine competitor in the luxury EV space.
